The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts

Carnival Jubilee has self-service pressing rooms on decks 4, 5, 9, 14 and 15 with ironing boards and irons that are free to use. Instead, passengers can send out their clothing for washing, pressing and dry-cleaning for a per-item fee. Passengers can carry on one bottle of wine or Champagne per person (21 years and older); this will incur a $15 corkage fee for consumption in public areas. Each person can also bring up to 12 standard cans or cartons of nonalcoholic beverages like juice or soda. The second quarter involves pool deck games where passengers have to dress up in football gear to complete team races.

I also didn't like the "SNOOZIN'" door hangers, which often got caught in my door when I closed it; I would've rathered a "do not disturb" button like many other new ships have. Speaking of the bed, it was exceptionally comfortable, and I was excited to find that the TV across from it had a sizable selection of free movies (as well as newer releases for a fee). The TV also allows you to watch select live channels and shipboard programming and to check your onboard bill. One afternoon later in the sailing, two different crew members approached me a total of six times in less than half an hour while I was having lunch on the Lido deck. The first five times, I simply said, "No, thanks." After the sixth time, I had enough and told them nicely but firmly to stop asking me. I found the high-pressure sales tactics excessive and irritating when all I wanted to do was eat my meal in peace.

The relationship between ship size and luxury

Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings. Chantelle Kincy, a cruise enthusiast and travel blogger at Flannels or Flip Flops, observes the rising popularity of prominent cruise lines. As a rule, interior, windowless cabins are the least expensive, while cabins with ocean-view balconies are the priciest. Additionally, larger cabins and extra perks like early boarding usually come at a higher cost. However, you should purchase your insurance immediately after booking your trip. First, this ensures coverage if your trip is canceled or you can’t travel.

Both types of sailings begin and end in Galveston and visit Mahogany Bay in Roatan and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico with three sea days mixed in. The only difference between the two itineraries is the order in which the port calls and sea days occur. It's so common for JavaBlue to be backed up throughout the day that an easy-to-miss sign directs passengers to other locations where they can grab a cup of coffee.

The best cruise lines offer travelers the opportunity to experience some of the world’s finest vacation destinations while enjoying a wide variety of amenities for every member of the family. From pools, waterslides and mini golf for kids to spas, shows and nightclubs for adults, there is something for everyone on a cruise ship. The other perks included in your cruise fare will depend on how much you pay; many larger cruise lines offer multiple tiers of fares. The lowest tier will be the cheapest, but you should expect to pay out of pocket for extras like drinks, certain restaurant meals and activities and excursions once you’re on board. Higher fare tiers include more amenities but are significantly more expensive.

Oceania Cruises

However, to offset this drawback, drink prices are reasonable ($5-6 for a beer and $9 for basic cocktails), including the tip. Cruises are booming right now, buoyed partly by the popularity of domestic seacations that hauled in first-time sailors. So much so that Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ 34,000-mile world trip for 2024 sold out in just over two hours, while the adults-only Virgin Voyages, which aims to throw cruise stereotypes overboard, rose to first place in Large Ships.

My only complaint is that, apart from a claw cracker, there were no other tools available to get to the crab meat. (I asked.) My waiter had no bibs or wet wipes to offer, which left me a bit messy afterward. As a sucker for soft-serve ice cream, I was a frequent visitor to the three soft-serve ice cream and frozen yogurt machines on decks 8, 16 and 17. Also on Deck 8 are Coastal Slice and neighboring Beach Buns, which respectively replace the pizza and deli counters found by the pool on most other Carnival ships.

Suites in all three of these special accommodation types also give passengers the suite perks mentioned above. Combining noise with the annoyance of hawking alcohol, the roving waiters visited every table at Chibang! — the ship's hybrid Mexican-Asian restaurant — one night while I was having dinner there. Whenever somebody bought one, the waiter would demand that they yell "Shot, shot, shot!" before downing it.

It's tied with Carnival Celebration for the title of the largest ship in Carnival's fleet. No, you can usually go on a cruise without being vaccinated for COVID-19 or other diseases. However, verify each destination's vaccine policies to ensure they have no requirements. Ships also have a living room where guests can gather to talk or relax while listening to classical music performed by resident musicians.

Fun pursuits on the daily schedule might include arts and crafts, themed parties, science experiments, games and story time, depending on the age group. If you're interested in spending time outdoors working on your tan by the pool, you can do so at one of five onboard pools. Carnival Jubilee offers a full roundup of daily activities on each voyage. The space is simply packed with tables — so much so that there were only about two inches between my table and the one next to me, even though I was dining alone.

A version of this chef Emeril Lagasse-affiliated spot is on each of Carnival's Excel Class ships, bearing the hull number of the original vessel for which the new one is named. Simply walk up to order at the counter, have a seat and a waiter will take over from there. With calming seafoam green and yellow decor alongside extras like Elemis toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, these are some of the most relaxing cabins on any ship. These guests also receive priority spa appointments and free access to fitness classes and the onboard thermal suite. These cruises are a step up from those on mainstream ocean liners, and so tend to cater to a slightly older crowd.

Second, purchasing early may qualify you for add-on coverage like “cancel for any reason,” which is typically available only within a specific period (about 15 days) after you book your trip. Cruise lines offering or hosting themed trips are Norwegian Cruise Line, Windstar Cruises, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean. Premium cruises are generally mid-size (1,500-2,000 passengers) to large (over 2,000 passengers). If you’re ready to hop aboard, here are Money’s picks for the five best cruise lines of 2023. For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Disney ships’ family-oriented experiences — like character meet-and-greets and themed dinners — keep the line a perennial favorite among family travelers. Royal Caribbean International ranks second with its diverse onboard amenities and dining options. Carnival Cruise Line, a tenured name often celebrated for its water parks and family-friendly activities, rounds out the top three. Virgin Voyages cruise line is a great option for travelers who want to enjoy a cruise vacation tailored exclusively for adults.

It then took nearly 10 minutes for a waiter to bring me water and another 10 before someone came to take my order. In my experience, waiters were diligent in asking about dietary requirements and restrictions. However, it was disappointing to see that many menus weren't marked with specific options for vegetarians, vegans and people who can't eat gluten. Dinner reservations are recommended for many eateries, even the main dining rooms. You can make them by visiting your restaurant of choice or by using the HUB app.

Royal Caribbean Disembarkation Time & Tips Quick Guide

how long does it take to disembark a cruise ship

Once you’re all packed up and ready to go, you’ll be asked to wait in designated public areas until your luggage tag number is called. Keep your cruise card in hand, as you’ll be scanned as you leave the ship. The procedures for getting off a cruise ship, as well as cruise ship disembarkation times, can be confusing to first-time cruisers. How long does it take to disembark a ship, and can you just walk straight onto the pier? Perhaps you're wondering how quickly you'll be able to go ashore during a port call so you can soak up every second of sunshine.

Biofuel is a renewable energy source that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping us decrease our carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future. This initiative sets an example for the cruise industry to explore alternative fuel options and mitigate the negative environmental impact of cruise ship operations. Using biofuel on cruise ships demonstrates my commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability. Royal Caribbean Group is leading the way in the cruise industry by testing sustainable biofuel on two of its ships, Celebrity Apex and Symphony of the Seas.

Remember to keep a carry on bag for the last night and morning of your cruise. Things to think about include night clothes, morning clothes, toiletries, valuables, tech stuff like laptops and phone chargers and personal ID and documentation. Maybe you’re driving straight home from the port and you’ve got 10 hours of road ahead of you, and an earlier time would be better. In this post, I’ll go through some common questions and things you need to know about cruise disembarkation. It’s a good idea not to book a flight before noon on debarkation day in order to give yourself plenty of time, but sometimes the only flights available are for earlier in the day. Part of the reason for that unpredictability is the amount of other passengers, and another part is the immigration process.

How Long Do Manatees Typically Live in the Wild?

By adopting biofuel, cruise companies like Royal Caribbean Group can decrease their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future. The ongoing biofuel testing on two Royal Caribbean ships, Celebrity Apex and Symphony of the Seas, will provide valuable insights for further advancements in biofuel technology. This initiative sets an example for other cruise companies to explore alternative fuel options and reduce their environmental footprint. The successful implementation of biofuel in the cruise industry can inspire other sectors to adopt sustainable practices. This cross-industry collaboration for sustainability has the potential to make a significant impact on the renewable energy market.

While most cruise ports do not have rental car agencies onsite, you can arrange for some rental car agencies to send a van to take you to their office. Occasionally cruise ports are on public transit lines, but check before you choose this option to make sure you won't be hauling heavy luggage farther than expected. This can lead to long, slow lines with hundreds — or thousands — of passengers trying to carry all their luggage. The sheer numbers of people trying to get off the ship at once can lead to delays unless you are at the front of the line. Other times, however, you can simply grab your bag, start walking and barely have to stop until you are out of the cruise terminal.

If you notice a discrepancy, bring it to the attention of guest services as soon as possible. The fact is that once you leave the cruise ship, you are accepting the statement and it’s extremely difficult to go back and dispute any charges. For whatever your reason, if you’re given a time doesn’t work well for you, simply bring your luggage tags to guest services and ask if you can get an alternative time.

How long can you stay on the cruise ship’s last day?

Carry Your Own LuggageWhen debarking the ship, you’ll be given the option of either “self-debarkation” or the normal process of leaving. If you can carry all your baggage, then you can choose the self-debarkation option. In this case, you simply carry all bags off with you and you’ll be in the first group to get off the ship. That means you exit the ship, take a picture, and you are on your way. Some ports — or if you are traveling with a birth certificate — do things the old way where you have to wait in line to meet with an agent that checks your documents. In this case, expect the process to take considerably longer, depending on lines and the number of agents.

In many cases it can little as a few minutes, but we’ve personally been on cruises where debarking has taken more than a couple of hours. Notably, in the more recent pandemic-era sailings, some cruise lines have managed to speed up the process with much less waiting around time. Here are a few key pieces of advice to help you avoid mistakes when disembarking a cruise ship. If it's a port day and you've booked a ship-sponsored shore excursion, your meeting time and place will be marked on your ticket. If you book a flight that departs in the afternoon, you should always have enough time to get to the airport. However, from when your group is called, you’ll be off in around 15 minutes.

Small and luxury ships can have flexible, even leisurely, disembarkation plans. You can, however, get off later (unless you have a scheduled transfer from the cruise pier that you'd be in danger of missing). Most people get to the airport by taking a cab or by purchasing transfers with the cruise line. You can do this before your cruise with the cruise line or with help from your travel agent. You can often also add these on during your cruise at the guest services desk, but do verify. Hopefully it’s been a great cruise vacation and you’ve got dreams of future cruises in your head.

If you are not doing self-assist, be sure to listen out for Royal Caribbean staff announcing when it’s our turn to disembark. Once your luggage tag number is called keep your cruise Seapass card handy as well as a valid ID (such as a passport) for a smooth exit. The number matches a set departure time and also matches the area where you will find your luggage when you get off.

how long does it take to disembark a cruise ship

Crewmembers will pick up your luggage during the night, hold it in storage until the ship is docked, then carry it off the ship in the morning. It will then be placed in sections in the terminal, according to tag colors. Once you reclaim your bags in the terminal, you usually must transport them through Customs before you leave the cruise terminal.

They provide guidance and support to passengers during the customs clearance process, helping to expedite the overall disembarkation experience. When your cruise ship arrives at its disembarkation port, local immigration officials need to clear the ship before anyone can disembark. Ships that terminate in U.S. ports may require passengers to fill out Customs forms and show their passports to border control in the cruise terminal.

These assigned times, are really approximate and what the cruise line is hoping for, if all goes as planned. You may find hundreds or thousands of other passengers have the same idea. It’s still the fastest way to get off the ship, but can still take some time. If you want to limit your wait to get off the ship, we suggest just find something to do for about 30 minutes once debarking at the port of call begins.

Also, you will receive an “As You Depart” guide that will provide detailed information on timing, where to grab breakfast and other important instructions. Despite the potential stress of disembarkation day, remember that it’s the end of what’s likely been a wonderful vacation. So, once leave the cruise terminal, take a deep breath, take your time, and transition back to land life as smoothly as possible.

Additionally, you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast at one of the onboard restaurants before disembarking. If you have some time to spare before your transportation arrives, you can explore the ship’s boutiques and purchase any last-minute souvenirs. When you step off the ship, you’ll be amazed by the variety of transportation options available to explore your next destination. From taxis to buses to rental cars, post-disembarkation transportation options are abundant. This ensures that you can easily get around and visit all the local attractions. Next, familiarize yourself with the post-disembarkation activities offered by MSC Cruises.

What is the largest cruise ship in the world?

cruise ship capacity

These ports often have a more laid-back and relaxed atmosphere, with fewer crowds and more opportunities for personalized shore excursions. When choosing a cruise ship, it's important to consider the passenger capacity and cabin categories to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Whether you prefer a budget-friendly inside cabin or a luxurious suite, there's a cruise ship out there for everyone.

Cruise Ship Passenger Capacity

The ship was built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, and delivered to the cruise line on January 27, 2022. Small ships are the most nimble, so they can travel to remote areas (like the Arctic or South Pacific) or smaller ports in popular cruise regions like Europe and the Caribbean. Expect longer itineraries on average without a lot of homeporting and repeat ports. Because cabins are limited, these ships can sell out quickly, especially on sought-after sailings, so the best prices and perks packages are usually offered early. As of January 2022, Wonder of the Seas has the largest passenger capacity, with a total capacity of 6,988 passengers.

Celestyal ships capacity

Her lifelong passion for travel has taken her to countless destinations around the globe, but cruising, undeniably, holds a special place in her heart. Judith has embraced the elegance of luxury liners, relished the intimacy of boutique ships, and marveled at the innovation found on the newest megaships. This varied experience makes her a well-rounded and knowledgeable commentator on everything cruise-related. Cruise ship costs can vary greatly depending on a number of factors, including the size of the ship, the length of the cruise, and the amenities offered. Some cruises can cost as little as a few hundred dollars per person, while others can cost several thousand dollars per person.

MSC Seashore

These ships offer the most amenities and entertainment options, from multiple pools and restaurants to Broadway shows and virtual reality experiences. Megaships are ideal for travelers who want a resort-like experience at sea. The crown of the world’s biggest cruise ship previously went to Wonder of the Seas, an Oasis-class vessel operated by Royal Caribbean.

Midsize Ships

But the largest cruise ships on the planet are in another league altogether. They can measure up to 250,000 gross tons (roughly triple the size of a ship built 30 years ago!) and when at full capacity with crew, have nearly 10,000 people onboard. Having two dinner times allows the ship to have enough time and space to accommodate all of their guests.

cruise ship capacity

One of the most common ways to measure the size of a cruise ship is by its gross tonnage (GT). This measurement takes into account the volume of the ship's enclosed spaces, including cabins, dining areas, and other facilities. However, it does not take into account the weight of the ship, which can also be an important factor.

cruise ship capacity

Celebrity Cruises is a premium cruise line that offers a more upscale experience. Their newest ship, Celebrity Apex, can accommodate up to 2,910 passengers. Celebrity is known for their modern and sophisticated design, as well as their culinary offerings. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) Encore is a part of the four-ship Breakaway Plus-class, a class known for mimicking small cities with numerous outdoor activities.

MSC Virtuosa, which is another member of the Meraviglia-Plus class, first set sail in May 2021. It is easily one of the largest in MSC's fleet (along with sister ship Grandiosa), having 2,421 cabins on 15 passenger-accessible decks (18 decks total). One of the wonderful things about cruising, is that there is so much variety to choose from when it comes to planning a voyage on the high seas.

Cruise ratings also may vary on the ship's age, size, cabins/venues/amenities, passenger feedback, etc. Besides CLIA and WMPH, other cruise vessel rating sources are Berlitz Guide, Fieldings Guide, Sterns Guide, CruiseCritic, CruiseReviews, and CruiseMates. Others operate elsewhere in places like Alaska, the South Pacific, the Baltic Sea and New England. A cruise ship that is moving from one of these regions to another will commonly operate a repositioning cruise while doing so.

Industry-specific and extensively researched technical data (partially from exclusive partnerships). All of the ships in Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class and Icon Class are at least five times larger than Titanic was. To make your planning process easier, we've broken down ship sizes into five categories and outlined some of the commonalities, so you can get a better feel for which ship size is right for you.

In this case, Symphony of the Seas (228,000 gross tons and the ability to hold 6,680 passengers) took the crown in 2018. Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas was previously the world's largest cruise ship, starting in January 2022. Its first voyage was in March 2022, becoming the fifth member of Royal's Oasis-class ships. The aptly named Wonder of the Seas has 18 decks (16 guest-accessible decks), 2,867 staterooms and 19 pools. The average passenger capacity of ocean-going vessels in the cruise industry worldwide experienced a 5.6 percent annual increase in 2023. That year, the global guest capacity of cruise ships was estimated at approximately 701 thousand.

Built in 2016, Harmony of the Seas features 18 decks, more than 225,000 gross tons (about 10% smaller than Icon of the Seas) and can carry nearly 6,700 passengers when completely full. That’s good enough to make it the fourth-largest cruise ship in the world. When it comes to the largest ships, Royal Caribbean is the undisputed leader with the six biggest cruise ships in the world. But the king of the fleet — and the largest cruise ship in the world — is Icon of the Seas. In conclusion, understanding cruise ship sizes is an important part of choosing the right cruise for your needs. By considering factors such as gross tonnage, length, height, draft, and passenger capacity, you can make an informed decision about which ship is right for you.

Longer ships can accommodate more passengers and amenities, while taller ships can offer better views and more open deck space. However, taller ships may also be more susceptible to wind and waves, which can affect the comfort of passengers onboard. Harmony of the Seas overtakes its older Oasis-class ships just slightly, making her the fourth-largest cruise ship in the world.

Disney's smallest ships are also this size, and they're certainly not lacking for entertainment and kid facilities. Regardless of line, with this size of ship, it's especially important to read reviews and look at which amenities a particular ship has because there will be a lot of variation, even within a fleet. For most of the big-ship lines, the midsized ships are their oldest and smallest. They're a mixed bag because some will have been refurbished with updated decor and new restaurants or attractions, but the size of the ship is a limiting factor as to how much can be added. You'll find fewer cabin category options and fancy suites, more modest kids' clubs and fewer specialty restaurants. Mega-ships are the biggest and newest of the big ships, generally offering the most restaurants, entertainment venues and accommodation categories in a cruise line's fleet.

You will also find popular features, like a swim-up bar, an adults-only pool, numerous hot tubs, and plenty of poolside snack bars. You will also find many cabins and suites designed for young families in the neighborhood, a splash area, several pools, and a carousel. With 20 decks, Icon of the Seas also sits an incredibly high 196 feet above the water line. That is roughly the same height as an 18-story apartment building; plus, a huge section of the ship sits below the water. What you need to know here is that Disney's ship designs are a little different than other ships, which increases the space ratio.

Bateaux New York Premier Dinner Cruise Review: Is it Worth it?!

Because everyone is dressed in their finest, the atmosphere is festive. Yes, outside cakes are allowed onboard, but they must be covered and held at your table, as there is only limited storage space on the ship. Open flames like a lit candle are prohibited on the vessels, including birthday candles.

The night moved from slow classics that had people dancing the night away with their loved ones in their arms to a little more upbeat after dinner – it was perfect. The standard New York Dinner Cruise is a more family-friendly option than the Bateaux Cruise, and it also offers a great experience but at a more affordable price. Whether you need assistance booking, helpful details for you to be prepared, or need to make a change, our knowledgeable and helpful customer support team is prepared to assist you.

How to Book the Bateaux New York Premier Dinner Cruise?

But if you only have a few days and want to see the highlights, these are other top attractions and activities we highly recommend checking out. We did the Bateaux New York Premier Dinner Cruise on a rainy night and the views were still incredible. The rain didn’t ruin anything for us, but those who get good weather are in for an even bigger treat, as you’ll get to see an awesome sunset. However, if you’ve got a late night reservation at one of New York’s best restaurants or you just want to save some cash, sunset cruises can still be a great way to sightsee. It’s certainly not an event for children, but they are welcome to join. Overall, the Bateaux Cruise is more aimed at adults rather than kids – it’s a sophisticated and romantic experience.

All in all, we think that this cruise is the better choice for families. The Bateaux Cruise is more sophisticated and better suited for couples who want a romantic evening, while the New York Dinner Cruise is livelier and more family-friendly. I hope our review of the Bateaux New York Premier Dinner Cruise has helped you decide whether it’s a good activity for you or not.

From the fully glass-enclosed dining deck or exterior open-air deck you will get panoramic breathtaking views of the iconic city sights. Enjoy a live band performance with female vocalist and pianist. Dine the night away with friends and family and soak in New York’s iconic skyline views. On this three-hour, luxury New York cruise, you’ll enjoy views of popular landmarks and savor a three-course dinner with live entertainment. You can relax in the glass-enclosed cabin or on the viewing deck, as you sail past the Empire State Building, Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty, and South Street Seaport.

Join the fun on the East River and Hudson River to see iconic views of this famous city from the glass-enclosed deck. Inspired by European design, your cruise with Bateaux New York offers a new, luxurious perspective from the water. The boat’s cabin is fully enclosed in glass, giving you unlimited views of not only the skyline of Manhattan but also of Brooklyn and New Jersey.

The Bateaux New York Premier Dinner Cruise varies in price between $250 – $300 USD per person, although on select dates you may be able to find tickets for $200 USD. It depends on the date you choose, and you can usually save money by booking in advance, so we don’t recommend waiting until the last minute. There’s also live music on board, and people do dress up for the occasion, so it does feel like a really special evening. We booked our New York dinner cruise on the website called Viator, and it was a seamless experience.

It’s hands-down the best dinner cruise we’ve ever done anywhere in the world. It’s somewhat expensive, but you get what you pay for (and more!) so we think it’s totally worth spending the extra money. One of my favorite things about the Bateaux New York Dinner Cruise was that it was an all-glass boat, so we couldn’t have asked for better views.

Just think about how many films and TV shows it has been used in! You’d probably be hard-pressed to find someone who wouldn’t recognize New York’s unique skyline, and it really does look incredible when viewed from the river. The boat leaves from Chelsea Pier, which is easy to reach with subway lines A, C and E. The men are expected to wear a (suit) jacket and tie but if you show up in a neat shirt without a jacket or a tie then you’ll still be allowed to board.

The kitchen is truly first class, and along with the live jazz you can enjoy with your dinner this will make a very special evening. The Bateaux New York Premier Dinner Cruise is an all glass boat, so it’s the ultimate way to see the city from the river. You can book your Bateaux New York Premier Dinner Cruise tickets easily online here through Viator. Viator is our go-to when it comes to booking tours and we’ve always had good experiences with them. You can also choose to pay in your home currency to save money on those costly international bank fees.

We loved seeing her lit up at night, so we would definitely recommend a dinner cruise over a day cruise. Dinner is served at around 8 pm, and it’s a three-course plated dinner that comes out in stages. You get to choose from a menu when you arrive what you would like for each course. We loved the food and were absolutely stuffed by the end of the meal – it was way better than the fare that we would usually expect from a dinner cruise.

When we did the cruise, we ate dinner with the a view of the Statue of Liberty right outside our window, it was very special. This particular sunset cruise is an excellent choice because you get to sail along on a 1920s replica yacht with a glass of complimentary champagne in hand as some relaxing music plays. There are indoor and outdoor observation areas so you can watch the sunset however you like and see the skyline and the Statue of Liberty up close. The cruise costs $86 USD per person and the boat is really comfortable and classy.

During the summer in New York City, dinner cruises depart in time to catch the sunset, which is a spectacular experience. NYC sunsets are pretty amazing in general and watching the sun sink over the city and river is pretty magical. We’ve been on dinner cruises all over the world, but the one that we did in New York was the best one we’ve ever done – seriously, it was incredible! It was the highlight of our time in the city, and a fantastic experience from start to finish. There are ramps to get on the boats and accessible facilities on board.
